About
This was a passion project. I love guitars and I’ve always believed that you don’t need the most expensive instrument to play. If you know anything about the blues or rock legends, they didn’t start off playing a $12,000 piece. They played what they had and even the most experienced musicians haven’t played guitars that are under museum glass. I play bass and wanted to both modify my cheap, practice bass and make my own case with the help of my artist friend who’s a bit of a luthier himself. I wanted to make a case that was light and mirrored vintage guitar cases wrapped in tweed. I used disposable pieces of wood, yoga mats for padding, a pink fleece blanket for the interior lining, and a holographic vinyl for the exterior.
For my bass, I stripped it of its hardware and replaced it with Fender hardware, replaced the electrical/pickup unit, matted the shiny black color with steel wool, and cut a new pick guard out of plexiglass to spray paint it gold. I also hand-milled a cavity on the back of the body to place the new active pickup battery.
This project not only awakened the maker in me but was one where I could exercise my ethos - making with humble and limited means.
